A drone prison at Tromsø Airport

Surprised there are no FPV drones in there. Guess FPV pilots are smarter!

FPV gives you a sense of freedom, and no one wants to lose that by letting a drone decide where to fly or having it broadcast your location. FPV pilots are usually more responsible about not flying near airports.

DJI doesn’t always add every no-fly zone to their app. If people saw how restricted flying is, they might not buy drones in the first place.

Makes sense. A colleague of mine said DJI doesn’t really check the documents people submit to unlock zones. He even used pictures of his dog, and they still approved it.

@Gentry
Exactly. And people keep downvoting me for saying this, but I’ve seen it firsthand. DJI sells the police tech to track drones, but they don’t bother to update their app with all the no-fly zones. It’s frustrating, especially in places like the EU, where the cops show up instantly and have all your drone data.

I saw the no-fly zone sign right away when I got off the boat. I left my drone behind, not risking deportation.

You probably wouldn’t get deported, but they’d hit you with a hefty fine. Tromsø is strict because it’s a tourist hotspot, but it’s on an island, so the whole area is a no-fly zone due to the airport.

@Ari
The sign said as a foreigner, I could be expelled, so I wasn’t taking any chances. I got some great shots with my regular camera instead.

@Ari
Actually, some tourists do get deported. Here’s an article: https://www.nrk.no/tromsogfinnmark/15-turister-utvist-i-2023-_-ny-teknologi-avslorer-drone-syndere-1.16684905
