Are drones just fancy toys or tools… what do you think?

I’ve been thinking about how different drones are from each other. Some are all about cameras, and some feel like they’re made just for fun. Am I right, or do you see it differently?

Camera drones are like flying tripods, while FPV drones feel more like strapping a camera to a rocket.

I’d compare them to a helicopter and an airplane.

That’s a way better comparison.

Glad someone mentioned this… exactly what I was thinking.

Wouldn’t it be interesting to compare FMRI brain scans of fighter pilots and FPV drone pilots?

As much as I love FPV, fighter pilots would completely outperform most of us.

You’re right, but they serve very different purposes. Camera drones are great for photography and video, while FPV drones are much more exciting to fly. It’s like comparing a pickup truck (practical) to a Ferrari (just fun). I use both depending on what I need to do.

@Milan
FPV drones aren’t just for fun. They’re amazing for cinematic shots that need energy and movement, especially since standard drone shots have become so common. A camera drone is more like a fancy crane.

I’ve always wondered why some people call them cinema drones instead of FPV drones.

I’ve heard the term cinema drone used a lot. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone call them Line of Sight drones though. :thinking:

@Nico
The bigger drones like the DJI Inspire sometimes get called that. Smaller ones are usually just called photography drones.

Still, I’ve never heard anyone say ‘Line of Sight drones.’

@Nico
Some people might call them that, but it sounds strange to me.

I’ve heard them called cinelifters, but never ‘cinema drones.’ People usually just say ‘photography drones’ or ‘camera drones.’

That sounds like classic boomer terminology.
