Are police exempt from Part 107?

There are two options: one is Part 107, the other is an FAA exemption. Part 107 is easier for the most part.

About a year ago, I took a Part 107 course with some LAPD officers, so I don’t think they’re exempt.

I’m a LE drone pilot (and detective). All of our pilots are Part 107 certified. We do have some flexibility in emergency situations, like life-threatening ones. A lot of times, we don’t have enough time to get LAANC approval. It’s easier to get waivers for things like flying above 400 feet, BVLOS, or after hours.

You could file a FOIA request and ask about the details of their drone program.

I think they’re legit, but who knows.
