Wait… insurance companies in the US use drones to inspect properties? Is that legal?

Yeah, it used to be that they’d come to your house when you weren’t home to do inspections. Now, they can just use drones instead.

They’ll do whatever they can to avoid paying out. Insurance companies are sneaky like that.
@Sage
You don’t become a multi-billion-dollar company by paying people what they deserve.
@Sage
Money for nothing, eh?
@Sage
Insurance is the biggest scam in a capitalist economy. It’s part of the cursed FIRE trio – Finance, Insurance, Real Estate.
@Sage
Exactly. They wriggle out of paying claims while still keeping your money. It’s shady.

Yup, they don’t want to refuse to insure you outright because that means they wouldn’t make any money. It’s all about squeezing as much as they can out of people.

I was wondering who was flying all those drones at night.

How is this even allowed? Isn’t flying a drone over someone’s house an invasion of privacy?
@Sawyer
It might feel like that, but it’s not really. You don’t have much expectation of privacy for things visible from the air, and they can get most of this info from public sources.

Flying a drone over someone’s house is definitely different from looking at public data. If that were the case, I should start flying drones over the houses of attractive people!
@Sawyer
They don’t have to fly directly over your house. They can see your roof or a fire hazard from way outside your property line.

Maybe we should find out where the CEO of one of these companies lives and fly drones around their house all day. See how they like it.
@Orin
What’s the plan, drop their insurance coverage?

Nah, the idea is just to annoy them until they support privacy laws.
@Orin
CEOs can afford to block drones or jam signals. Good luck with that!

But isn’t flying drones over populated areas illegal? What if people are walking by?
@Sawyer
You can actually file a flight plan for that. As long as it follows the rules, you’re good.
@Sawyer
Google Earth can give you most of the view without needing a drone. You don’t even need to fly over someone’s house to see everything. Laws don’t really support the idea that you have complete privacy over your property.
