DJI’s response to low bitrate on Osmo Action 5 Pro. Anyone else frustrated?

Just like always, DJI doesn’t give us the option to change the bitrate on the Osmo Action 5 Pro, and it’s so annoying. The footage looks low quality, and zooming in post-edit makes it even worse. I’d much rather deal with shorter battery life than have my 4K footage look all compressed. Why can’t they just hide a custom bitrate option in the Pro settings? We are already stuck with 4K instead of 5.3K, and now the bitrate is low too? This is just stupid.

DJI should definitely release a firmware update that lets us choose a high bitrate mode, even if it eats up more battery. I’d happily trade some battery life for better video quality.

Same here… more options would be great! @DJI_support

For those curious, here are some max bitrates of other cameras I found:

Hero9: 100 mbps
Hero10: 100 mbps
Hero11: 120 mbps
Hero12: 120 mbps

Action 4: 130 mbps
Action 5: Claimed 100 mbps, but seems closer to 60 according to reports.

DJI should definitely give users the choice, like GoPro does. I’ve got the Action 5 on order and will test it myself. If it’s not good, I’ll just return it. So many reviews feel a bit too positive, so I’ll see if it lives up to the hype.

A lot of reviews on launch day are from those who agreed to send their footage to DJI for approval and follow specific guidelines. Check Rainmaker’s Twitter for details. I love DJI, but this doesn’t feel right.

I’m looking to upgrade to either DJI or GoPro after using a cheaper Akaso for years. Mainly for fishing trips and basic edits. Any of these will be a step up from my Brave 7 LE.

This isn’t fully accurate. GoPro with GoPro Labs can hit 200 mbps. I’ve set mine to 180 mbps with noise reduction off… the quality is amazing.

Action 5 Pro uses HEVC encoding, which is more efficient than H.264 on GoPro or Action 4. But efficiency only really matters at lower bitrates.

GoPro does use HEVC, and the ‘2x efficiency’ only matters at very low bitrates. At higher rates, the difference is minimal, maybe 10-20% at best.

Same issue with no built-in GPS… they want to sell you a separate GPS remote to add another 15 minutes of runtime.

Wait, doesn’t it have GPS built in?

Nope, sadly not built in.

I have a GoPro 11 with GPS, but I keep it off. What’s the big deal about GPS on action cameras anyway?

I got the GoPro 11 specifically for the GPS. I like having speed overlays on my biking videos and seeing all the data when I import my files.

Same here… helps me keep track of everything.

That’s cool if you like that, but I just keep mine off. My drone already captures all the data I need.

I get it, for diving and drones, GPS is pretty useless. But for content creators, it’s a nice feature to have.

You can use a *.fit file for overlays too.

They should just add an option for higher bitrate with a warning about battery life.

Exactly. DJI should’ve seen this coming. People don’t want worse bitrate just to get a bit more battery life, especially when it was better on the last model.

Lower bitrate means less data, so the video looks worse with more compression artifacts. It’s like watching a 720p video on a 4K screen—looks bad because there isn’t enough data to make a clear picture.

The videos I’ve seen from the Action 5 look pretty good… am I missing something?
