Is the built-in screen on the controller really worth it?

@Ray
No, it’s not auto-brightness. The phone dims to control the temperature when it heats up. It only happens on hot, sunny days, which, of course, is when I like to fly.

It’s definitely worth it to me.

Same here.

I’ve flown more since getting the pro controller. It’s just more convenient with the dedicated screen.

I upgraded to the RC Pro from the basic controller with my Mavic 3, and it made a huge difference in quality of life. Even without considering the improved features, not having to connect my phone was almost worth the price alone. And that was for a $1200 controller. For $200? Absolutely worth it.

No more messing with phone mounts or extra cables. You just turn the controller on and start flying in seconds.

It makes flying so much easier. The screen is good and bright, and you don’t have to worry about your phone battery. I had the original smart controller and now use the RC Pro. It’s just more convenient. The only reason to stick with the N1 would be if you’re trying to save weight for travel. Some people thought the signal strength on the older version was weaker, but that’s been fixed in the newer models. Most people arguing against it probably haven’t even tried it.

The built-in screen controller also has a zoom wheel, two programmable buttons on the back, and nicer control sticks.

I went with the basic controller and it works great, but the one with the screen is definitely a nice option.

@Quirin
Interesting, I’ve never noticed a difference in the sticks. I have both the N1 and the RC and prefer the N1 with a tablet for the larger screen. I got used to having just one wheel. I don’t miss the buttons on the back either since I always pressed them by accident.

It’s not the only way to fly, but the RC controllers offer a much better experience. They’re the size of the N1 without a phone, which is a big plus. Plus, you avoid the hassle of phones overheating, notifications interrupting flights, and fiddling with the setup. The second scroll wheel is nice too. You can also add more storage with an SD card, which is great for recording your screen. It’s nice not having to run screen recording on your phone while flying.

The one advantage of using a phone is that you can immediately share videos and photos, which is handy for quick posting.

Are the screens actually good? Most people probably have better phone screens, right?

The screen is solid, and many people experience dimming on their phones, especially with iPhones.

@Max
Yeah, I’ve read about that here. I don’t think any of my phones ever did that, though.

Your phone screen might be better, but drones only broadcast at 1080p, so a better phone screen won’t show a better image. Also, your phone will dim if it gets too hot, but the RC controllers don’t have that problem.

I have both, and the one with the screen makes life a lot easier.

It’s 100% worth it, not just for the lack of overheating but also the uninterrupted flying, the brightness, and not having to worry about your phone battery. It’s a lot better than you’d expect. Plus, it adds value—you’re not really wasting $200 since you can resell the controller and get most of your money back.

@Mason
I want to believe you, but the only point I agree with is that iPhones tend to overheat.

Um, no. They’re all true. Read the other comments.

If everyone’s recommending it and you’re still saying no, why did you ask? You’re not interested in actual advice, I guess.

Literally no one said not to get it. I’ve never seen a clearer recommendation, and you’re just ignoring it.

The phone battery issue is real, your phone’s battery is probably draining faster because you’re using it all day, but the remote stays charged. And no one likes getting texts or calls while flying.

It’s basically a deposit, buy one for $180 and sell it later for $180. You won’t regret it, and you’ll have a better flying experience.

@Mason
The financial bit is interesting, but it doesn’t convince me to buy it. If I really needed it, I’d already know. I’m just trying to understand why people love the built-in screen, so I can make a decision if I find myself needing one later. It’s not about convincing me to buy it right now, but thanks for your input.

@Ellis
Sure, if you can’t justify spending $200, that’s one thing. But not getting it just because you’re not convinced isn’t the best choice. Some things are hard to explain accurately in a forum.

Eventually, if you can afford it, I’d recommend it. It won’t lose much value over time, maybe $60 tops, and it’s totally worth it.
