Is the DJI Flip any good or should I just go for the Mini 4 or another brand?

I’ve been looking at the DJI Flip and the Mini 4 Pro and honestly, they seem pretty close when it comes to specs. The only real differences I noticed are the sensors and maybe a better camera on the Mini 4 Pro, but I probably won’t even use all those features since I’m new to this.

Are the camera upgrades on the Mini 4 Pro really that noticeable? I’m a total beginner and I don’t know much about drones or cameras.

Can the Flip use the intelligent flight battery?

Also, can either the Flip or Mini 4 Pro follow me while I’m riding my bike or dirt bike?

I like that they both use the same controller. Just wondering if the Flip is good for someone like me who’s starting out. Or is the Mini 4 Pro that much harder to use?

Or maybe there’s another drone out there that’s better for someone who wants to get into taking photos and videos with drones?

Would really appreciate any advice. Thanks guys!

I’ve flown both quite a bit. If you plan to fly in windy spots, go with the Mini 4 Pro. I liked the Flip too because of its prop guards, and I was surprised how well it followed me through a trail. The sensors on it are solid — it even stopped for a tiny bare branch. But if I had to pick, I’d go with the Mini 4 Pro. It’s been reliable for me. I actually just upgraded to the Air 3S. I think both the Flip and Mini 4 Pro are good, but the Mini wins for me.

Here’s a quick review I did of the Flip: DW on Instagram: "The DJI Flip just arrived, and I couldn’t wait to get started. Straight out of the box, it made a solid impression. After updating the DJI Assistant on my MacBook and the firmware for both the drone and my RC 2 controller, setup was quick and seamless. I charged it for about an hour before heading out to one of my favorite spots for a test flight. Conditions weren’t ideal—14 mph wind gusts and temperatures in the 40s—but I was ready to see what the Flip could do. My first challenge came during launch. I tried to take off from both concrete and a picnic table, but I kept getting an error that the fan motors were stuck or blocked. After a few failed attempts, I decided to launch it by hand using the RC 2. Once airborne, everything was smooth sailing. Hovering in the wind was my first real test, and the Flip’s 3-axis gimbal performed well. Even with some minor shifts from the gusts, it stabilized the footage beautifully. Next, I flew it across the field toward a covered bridge to test the collision sensors. Approaching the bridge in Normal mode, the Flip hesitated, anticipating obstacles and slowing down considerably. It reminded me of how my DJI Neo reacts in similar conditions, especially in lower light. With some effort, I managed to guide it through the bridge. To see if I could improve its performance, I switched to Sport mode. This time, the Flip flew through the bridge without hesitation or issues, handling the challenge like a pro. From there, I moved on to tree-covered trails. Here, the lidar sensors truly shined. The Flip was able to detect even the smallest branches, stopping in time to avoid them. My Mini 4 Pro wouldn’t have picked up on these obstacles, so this was a big win for the Flip. I decided to push the limits, flying toward the same branch at different speeds. Each time, the lidar detected the obstacle and stopped the drone in its tracks. This level of precision left me thoroughly impressed and gave me confidence in its capabilities. The Flip’s camera uses the same tech as the Mini 4 Pro, and it shows. Even before any editing or color grading, the footage looked stunning, with sharp details and vibrant colors. It’s clear this drone is buil"

@Teagan
Would you say both are easy enough for a beginner? And is the Flip’s camera close in quality to the Mini 4 Pro?

I’m leaning toward the Mini 4 Pro too but I’m not sure if it’s worth spending $400 more since I’m just starting out. And yeah, I guess other brands can’t really compete with DJI, right?

@Mai
If it’s your first drone, I’d say go with the Flip. From what I’ve seen, the cameras are pretty close. I mainly used the Flip indoors where I wouldn’t feel safe flying the Mini 4 Pro.

I won’t be flying inside at all. Mostly planning to record myself riding my e-bike and dirt bike, and get some nice coastline shots around Long Island and other outdoor stuff.

@Teagan
Great review! Are most of your clips on Instagram taken with the Flip or the Mini 4 Pro? And thanks — love the truck! Is that yours, or do you shoot videos for clients? I noticed you have a lot of car content — I guess you work in the auto business? Cool stuff!

Mini 4 Pro all day if you ask me.

Haha yeah I figured most people would say that.

I’ve got a Neo, an Avata 2, and a Mini 4 Pro. I love all of them for different reasons and fly them all FPV. But for clean video and smooth flying, the Mini 4 Pro is the best. The Neo is awesome for hiking trips, and the Avata 2 is just straight-up fun to fly. Good luck choosing!

@Murphy
Yeah I looked into the Neo, but I don’t think it’ll work great for the kind of coastline shots I want to get. Appreciate the tips!

The Flip’s actually really solid if you’re just starting and want to grab some good-looking shots. I’m new to it too and took mine with me on a coastal trip. It was a little windy, but the Flip handled it pretty well (the Mini 4 Pro would’ve probably done even better though). Here’s a video I took with it: https://youtu.be/eftjQytX9zI?si=JMosDa6Hy-ZTU3KE — and you can check out my profile for some photos too :slight_smile:
