Is the Mini 4 Pro as good (or better?) at tracking than the Flip?

So I originally got the Flip to take cool videos of my family hiking this year. Loved the idea of a drone that could follow us hands-free without needing to mess with a controller.

Now I’m thinking I should have just gone with the Mini 4 Pro instead.

I know the Flip has true hands-free tracking—I can turn it on and get shots without needing to connect anything. The Mini 4 Pro doesn’t work exactly like that, but other than that, does the Mini 4 Pro basically do everything the Flip can (and more) if I just use my iPhone?

Can I just pull out my phone, connect to the drone, choose tracking mode, and get the same kind of shots I’d get with the Flip? Or am I missing something?

Hoping someone here has used both and can give me some insight. Thanks in advance!

If you can afford it, go with the Mini 4. It does everything the Flip can do and gives you more room to grow. The Mini 4 doesn’t come with propeller guards, but you can buy them separately if you think you need them.

Use a lanyard and set up ActiveTrack, then just go on your hike.

What do you mean by ‘use a lanyard’? Thanks!

I meant getting the Mini 4 with the controller that has a built-in screen. That way, you can set up tracking mode, hang the controller from your neck with a lanyard, and have your hands free while hiking.

I don’t have experience with the Flip, though, so take my advice with a grain of salt lol.

Ahh, gotcha. I already ordered the one with the basic remote, thinking I could just use my phone like I do with the Flip. Not ideal.

Nah, it’ll work fine. Each drone has its pros and cons. End of the day, whatever gets you flying is the best choice!

Can the Mini 4 Pro be fully controlled with just the DJI app and my phone? That’s been super convenient with the Flip. Hoping it works the same way, or maybe they’ll add that feature later.

One big limitation with the Flip is its tracking range when you’re using it without a controller. It can only follow you at a pretty close distance, so if you’re hoping for wide cinematic shots, you might be disappointed.

Also, the Flip only has ‘brake’ obstacle avoidance, meaning it will stop if something is in the way, but it won’t automatically go around it like the Mini 4 Pro can. That means you might have to babysit it more often if it keeps getting stuck.
