Landing a drone in crazy wind and waves… anyone tried this?

Tried landing my drone today with strong winds and waves around. Definitely not the best conditions. Just glad I didn’t lose it!

I remember a friend’s drone ending up in the ocean trying something like this. It was over ten years ago, but still sad to see.

Yeah, that’s a risky move for sure.

This is why we can’t let the fish reverse engineer drone tech! I’ve been warning people about this forever!

Once, I used a fishing net to grab my drone out of the air when I was on a boat.

RIP to the propellers, though.

$10 for new props is better than losing a $1000 drone.

Couldn’t you just do an emergency shut-off and catch it safely?

@Casey
Yeah, mine detected the props stopping, and there weren’t any issues.

Next post will be: ‘Are drones safe with tangled props?’ (shows broken props wrapped in fishing line).

This isn’t landing, it’s boating the drone.

#1 tip: Turn on sports mode so sensors are off. Trust me, I learned the hard way.

When the boat moves, the drone might detect stuff as obstacles and freak out trying to dodge things.

Exactly! Sketchy landings near obstacles are stressful enough. Last thing you want is the drone stopping mid-flight near a post.

Just switch to brake mode instead of obstacle avoidance, and it’s fine.

@Bowie
True, but you’d have to hit the brake button every time you adjust. Sports mode is simpler for situations like this.

There’s a 3D-printable handle on Thingiverse that makes catching drones easier in these conditions.

I hand-launch and recover mine all the time. You get the hang of it after a while.

@Dakota
Isn’t there a way to catch it and flick your wrist to turn it off?

Yep, just flip the drone upside down, and the motors stop.

I was filming for a History Channel show on Lake Michigan with 40 mph winds and 15-foot waves. Producer asked if I could fly the drone. I said, ‘Sure, but it might not come back.’ It was a sketchy landing, but we pulled it off!
