Mini 3 Just Fell from the Sky… What Happened?

It was a bit windy, around 30 km/h, and the drone flew well until it suddenly dropped like a helicopter without its propellers spinning. There weren’t any birds or anything that hit it. After some effort, I recovered the drone and found no major damage except for some chipped propellers.

I’m curious if anyone knows what might have caused this? I have plenty of experience flying drones, mostly FPV. I bought the Avata there before, and it handled the wind just fine despite being smaller.

Did you accidentally hit the emergency shut-off maneuver with the controller?

I think when you push both sticks inside and down, it shuts the motors off.

Yep, that’s correct. I was lucky to read online about it before my first flight. I wouldn’t have known otherwise.

@Eli
You can turn off that feature in the remote settings.

I haven’t disabled it and never managed to get it to actually shut off. Tried several times.

Good to know, but I’m hesitant to disable it. If the screen malfunctions, it’s a helpful backup option to lower the drone safely.

How do you disable that feature? Thanks!

I’m new to flying drones, so this sounds scary. Do you mean that pushing both sticks diagonally inward shuts off the motors? I’m trying to imagine if that move would ever be needed, but it sounds like it kills propellers by default?

@Skylar
That’s right, it’s the same motion for starting the props before takeoff. I’ve never tried it, but it seems like a rare move that you’d accidentally trigger mid-flight.

I tried a few times but couldn’t get it to work. I was in a room above my bed, so I played it safe. Turns out you need to hold the sticks for a while, and then the drone flies in that direction. I was too close to the wall to find out how it shuts off.

@Zan
That makes sense. It gives users a moment to think before cutting the motors, but if you’re in a tight spot, you can still turn them off quickly.

@Zan
Try going outside at about 400 feet! I bet it’ll work then.

The takeoff method helps keep the drone off the ground in dusty or wet conditions. I also like how, during launch, you can pull it down about 10 cm while controlling it to make it hover.

@Skylar
Picture an X on the controller. Put X in the middle with each stick on the left and right. Push them down to make a V. If enabled, the drone will shut off.

That’s a terrible feature. It’s like finding a random game over move in Mortal Kombat but where your character kills themselves and you end up paying hundreds to continue. I can’t see any situation where this move could be useful. They should make that the default off.

@Tallis
That’s oddly specific.

@Tallis
I almost thought about using it yesterday. My RC screen was washed out, and I couldn’t close a pop-up while the drone was hovering. I eventually cleared it, but it was frustrating not being able to land it. I considered grabbing the drone and flipping it, but the propellers looked too messy to try.

Actually, that might be what happened.

I think it’s similar to the ‘take off’ maneuver, where you push both diagonally towards the center.
