New drone rules coming to Canada this year?

It looks like Canada is about to get some new drone laws soon. From what I read, it might make it easier to fly FPV. I’m really hoping they relax the 250-gram weight rule and raise the maximum weight for the basic license a bit. It’s tough flying something like the Avata 2 legally in bigger cities right now.

Seems like they’re updating the rules for stuff like unmanned deliveries. From what I’ve seen, some of the older restrictions on smaller amateur drones might get less strict, but we’ll have to wait and see.

As an FPV pilot, this makes me nervous.

Why nervous? DJI has been pushing for more flexibility with VLOS because of the safety systems in their drones.

FPV drones usually don’t have safety systems or sensors. Most are fully manual.

Not sure what point you’re making here.

@Riley
Think they’re trying to say FPV is pretty different from DJI setups.

Makes sense now.

What specifically worries you about these changes?

Here’s the thing… usually the US makes a law, and then Canada follows. There’s a good chance we’ll end up with RID laws too, and that’s a hassle for FPV pilots.

@Riley
Just fly legally, and you won’t have any problems.

RID is a huge pain for FPV pilots. Have you tried dealing with it?

It’s not that bad. Just swap your GPS module for one with RID built in. It’s a 5-minute fix.

I haven’t, and honestly, I don’t care if it’s a pain. It’s the law.

@Dane
Chill out, man. I was just saying it’s annoying.

@Riley
Who’s even enforcing these rules? I’ve never seen anyone out there checking.

Haha, I fly a bigger battery on my Mini 4 Pro sometimes, and it’s not registered. Nobody’s stopped me yet.
