Starting a Drone Business… Need Some Help and Advice?

The real trick is figuring out what sells. Drones fly themselves these days, and getting a Part 107 is easy. The hard part is knowing your market and how you can do it better than others. It’s not about what you like; it’s about what people are willing to pay for.

Luckily, my local competition isn’t great. They charge $200 an hour for pretty average work.

$200 an hour is actually on the low end.

I just meant I’m not facing tough competition in my area.

Most real estate agents have one photographer for everything, including drone shots. Try partnering with one of them. And be aware that making money from digital media is tough, especially when starting out. Look into internships or entry-level positions to build up your resume.

Start with networking. See what opportunities are available before deciding exactly what your business will be. Could be anything from photos to inspections. Freelance first, and if things go well, then set up an LLC.

Starting out, a Sole Proprietorship is fine, and you can move to an LLC later. Real estate and event photography are great entry points. Drone U is an awesome resource for training, business tips, and more. Cash management is key—make a plan and stick with it.

DARTdrones has a course on starting a drone business. Definitely worth looking into!

I’m starting a business too. Let’s connect and share ideas. DM me if interested.

Making a living in digital media is tough. I know drone pilots who have done hundreds of videos but haven’t made much. Becoming a skilled editor might give you an edge.

I have the Air 3 too and work in sales. The key is to get in front of potential clients like realtors or construction companies. Offer mapping and 3D models. Cold call and reach out directly to businesses—don’t just rely on them finding you.
