Thinking about getting my first drone, but IDK where to start. Do I need to register it? What are the rules? Any advice for a total beginner?
If your drone is more than 0.55 lbs, you gotta register with the FAA. It’s super easy though, just go to their website and pay the $5 fee. Don’t forget to slap the registration number on your drone somewhere.
@Sam
Wait, so do I have to register if my drone is just for fun?

Yup, even for fun, if it weighs more than half a pound. But if it’s just a tiny toy drone, you’re good.
Make sure you know where you can fly too! You don’t wanna be near an airport without permission. Check out LAANC for getting approval if you’re in restricted airspace.

What’s LAANC?
@Arun
Oh, it’s a system that lets you get approval to fly in restricted areas, like near airports. Super helpful if you wanna avoid fines!
Pro tip: Start with a cheap toy drone first! Trust me, you don’t wanna crash a $1,000 drone on your first try. You’ll learn a lot with the cheaper ones.

LOL, yeah, my first drone went straight into a tree. Glad it was only $25.
And make sure your first flight is in a big, open space. Parks are great! Avoid flying near buildings, trees, or water until you’re more confident.

I was tempted to try flying inside my house when I got my drone. Bad idea… indoor crashes happen fast, lol.
Anyone here taking formal drone training? I’m thinking about it to get more comfortable flying.

I did an online course, it’s way cheaper than in-person training. Drone Launch Academy has one that’s only $49 and you get lifetime access.
@Paxton
I’ve heard good things about Drone Pilot Ground School too! It’s great if you’re going for the Part 107 certification.
