I only fly my drone in areas that are marked green (allowed) on the Digital Sky website by the Indian Government. I’ve even registered my drone with them.
But every time I fly, security guards or police come over and try to harass me, even when I’m in public areas that are totally fine for flying.
For example, today I was flying near a river in a forest, which is clearly a green zone on the website. An older policeman walked up to me, didn’t check my registration or listen to my explanation, and just made me land the drone because he felt like it.
Why does this keep happening? Why do they assume drones are illegal everywhere? What should I do when this happens?
Best option is to fly somewhere else and avoid them. Second option is to hide so they can’t spot you. Third, dress up like you’re some official with a high-vis vest. But remember, even if you’re right, they could still get physical.
Print out the rules, make them easy to understand, and include a QR code with links. Carry a map showing the fly zones too. It’s a bit of effort but could save you arguments.

Good idea, I’ll keep all the documents with me. Guards and cops here can get really aggressive, and sometimes things escalate to violence.
@Kai
I spent a year in India, and people are just so curious when something unusual happens. Everyone wants to see what’s going on, and yeah, some might even try to get a little money out of it. I’d suggest not flying alone—you’re too distracted while watching the drone. Have someone with you and definitely dress the part, like others mentioned. By the way, where are you based? I was in Bihar and Chandigarh. Would love to see more drone footage of India!
