Wind Took My Mini 4 Pro and It Just Shut Down—What Do I Do?

Wind speeds are around 17 mph today in my area, didn’t think that would be the biggest issue as I’ve heard 25+ is where things could get dangerous. I took the drone to about 100ft to try and get some landscape shots.

Immediately it started to drift, I began to rapidly descend to try and stabilize, the whole drone just shut down and fell from probably about 50 ft and landed in the grass. Ran over to find this.

Who do I call to fix this?/How much is this going to cost me?

Also, why would the drone just power down like that?

There’s a setting that stops the motors if you push both sticks down and at an angle. By default, it’s set to ‘Emergency Only,’ but it can be changed to ‘Anytime.’

If it was set to ‘Anytime,’ holding the sticks down for a few seconds would’ve killed the motors mid-air and made the drone fall.

@Nico
That is an absolutely insane ‘feature’… holy shit.

I do drone repairs in Orlando. If it’s just an arm, I can fix it for $100 plus the part, $140 total installed.

If the center frame is cracked, you need to determine if it’s just cosmetic or an actual structural issue.

DJI in California is usually pretty reasonable for repairs, but if you need my help, let me know.

I’ll keep that in mind, thanks!

If it’s just the arm, definitely contact DJI first. I had the exact same break happen, and I didn’t even have DJI Care. They originally told me they’d just fix the arm, but instead, they sent me a brand-new replacement for about $140.

Worth a shot!

@Toryn
DJI has some of the best after-sales support, hands down.

I’d just shoot an email to DJI and be honest about what happened. Their customer service is usually great.

Glue.

Edit: Not calling you a liar, but it shutting down just because of strong wind sounds kinda odd.

Right? That’s what I was thinking too. I got a small error message saying the props stopped ‘due to interference’ or something like that. No idea what that means. Wasn’t anywhere near trees or obstacles.

I’ve had my Neo do something similar in strong wind, but never my Mini 4 Pro. If the Neo is in Follow Mode and fighting the wind, it sometimes distances itself, does a backflip, and falls to the ground. Luckily, it’s light and protected, so no damage. Maybe something similar happened?

More sensors don’t mean crash-proof. Contact DJI and see what they say.

I crashed my Mini 1 into a waterfall (I know, dumb). Didn’t have DJI Care, but they checked my flight logs, found an error, and sent me a free replacement anyway. Then I was able to add DJI Care to the new one.

Worth trying before paying out of pocket!

@Cael
Appreciate it! Already got the shipping label—sending it out today.

Man, mine just dropped into a river and was unrecoverable. Submitted a flyaway report since it wasn’t windy and wasn’t user error, and DJI offered me 15% off a new one.

So now I gotta spend $650 to replace it. Definitely getting DJI Care this time…

Check your flight logs. You sure you didn’t accidentally push the sticks to the corners? They don’t just shut off unless they flip over.

I only had one hand on the controller because I was trying to catch the drone with my other hand lol.

@Dakota
You were trying to catch a drone 50ft up? Ok.

I mean, I was running toward it with my arm out, palm open, as if that was going to do anything. :sweat_smile:

Have you checked the flight logs on the DJI app? You can replay the crash with GPS data and see your stick movements, messages, etc.

Already shipped it back, but yeah, I checked the logs. Got a strong wind warning right before it cut out.
