I just ordered a DJI Neo and I’m waiting for it to arrive. I know the reviews are kind of all over the place, but it was the best option for my budget
That said, I’ve come across a few posts saying it glitched out or vanished mid-flight. Is there a way to avoid this happening? Like, does it only happen over water or can it happen anytime? I’ve watched some of those ‘don’t make these DJI Neo mistakes’ videos, but I want to make sure I don’t lose it.
Appreciate any tips!
Honestly, don’t stress about it. It’s a Neo—just fly it. You’re overthinking this a bit. Just make sure to update the firmware once it arrives and you’ll be good.
Also, you didn’t say which version or controller you bought. If you got the base Neo and are just using your phone to control it, it’s suuuper slow and only has like a 50-foot range. Basically like a flying snail
Not much risk of it flying off.
If you want to unlock all the good features, you’ll need to get the actual controller or an FPV kit. Just something to keep in mind. Everything you need ends up costing around $500. If you can still return it, I’d suggest looking at the Mini SE or Mini 4K instead—they include the controller and perform way better.

I didn’t get the remote yet—I’m more interested in the automatic features and pre-set options right now since I’m new to drones. Just wanted something really beginner-friendly to grab some quick shots during hikes, e-bike rides, or out in the side-by-side.
Once I’ve got a bit more experience (and save up), I’m definitely planning to buy a proper controller. Thanks for the heads-up!

You’ll be fine using it with just your phone and the DJI Fly app. The range isn’t huge, but you still get access to most settings and tracking options. For casual flying and shots on the go, that setup works well—and it’s pretty unlikely it’ll just fly away on you.
