Avata 2 and Neo with one Controller and Goggles… how do I switch between drones?

Hi all,

I currently use my Avata 2 with the DJI FPV Controller 3 and Goggles 3, and it works great.

Now, I’m thinking of adding a Neo to my collection since it can also be used with the same setup. But I’m wondering—if I’m out flying and want to switch from one drone to the other, what’s the process?

Do I need to rebind the Goggles AND the controller each time I switch drones? Will that reset my settings?

If it’s too much hassle to switch back and forth, I might skip getting the Neo.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hey, I can’t answer your question directly, but I was wondering what you’re planning to use the Neo for compared to the Avata 2? I recently got the Neo, and I’m loving it, but I’m debating whether to invest in goggles and a remote controller or go for the Avata 2 combo.

@Arden
Honestly, the Neo is pretty basic. It’s more of a toy if you want to practice flying manually.

Thanks! I agree that the Neo feels more toy-like, but it has some perks like being small and easy to launch from your hand. Plus, it’s less of a worry if it gets lost or damaged. I’m just curious how it compares with the Avata 2.

@Arden
The Avata 2 is a huge step up—better quality, better control. It’s like comparing a sports car to a basic sedan. The only downside is it doesn’t have the ‘follow me’ mode, but I’ve never needed that feature anyway.

I have this setup! Once you have both drones bound, you just turn on the one you want to use. You might need to select it from the menu, but it’s easy to go back and forth.

Since you have both the Avata 2 and the Neo, do you feel it’s worth keeping both? Some people say the Neo isn’t necessary if you already own an Avata 2. I’m mainly thinking about it for tighter spaces or indoor flying. :eyes::smile:

@Sparrow
Yeah, I got the Neo partly to practice manual mode on something cheaper and more durable. It’s a fun little drone for tight spaces and even has autonomous features I wasn’t expecting to use as much as I do. Battery life isn’t great, so I recommend the Fly More Combo with extra batteries. For indoor use or just for fun, it’s awesome. Just be aware:

  • It’s quite a bit louder than the Avata 2.

  • It’s super lightweight, so wind can throw it around.

  • Video quality isn’t as sharp, but an ND filter helps. I actually got used to it, but switching back to the Avata 2 reminds me of the difference.

I’m considering using Topaz AI to enhance Neo footage. Check out this example—the quality improvement is surprising.

Overall, it’s fun for close calls and tighter spaces, but I wish they’d make a ‘pro’ version with a better camera.

@Wei
Thanks for the details! How well does the Neo keep up if you’re trying to chase something, like a car?

It’s definitely slower than the Avata 2. In manual mode, you can get around 25mph. This video shows someone reaching over 40mph with a tailwind, though!

Thanks for all your comments, everyone!

You just need to switch the firmware each time. When you turn on the other drone, it’ll ask you to update, then it should connect. If you’re using the RC2, it’ll flip between modes depending on which drone you’re connecting.

@Teagan
Is there a way to avoid firmware switching each time? I have the Mini 4 Pro and Neo, and it’s a pain having to update firmware every time, especially if I’m somewhere without a signal.

Unfortunately, no. Whenever I switch between the Mini 4 Pro and Neo, I have to change the firmware on the RC2 if I left it on the other one. I stick to the FPV gear with the Neo and Avata now to avoid that hassle.

For Goggles 3, just go into settings and switch to the Neo, then bind it. After that, it’ll remember both the Neo and Avata 2, so you just need to select the right drone in settings without rebinding each time.
