If I’m not flying for a few months, do I need to charge the batteries every now and then and run them down by hovering in front of a fan, or is it fine to just charge them and let them self-discharge?
They self-discharge, so don’t overthink it. Just check the charge before you go out, but otherwise, they’ll take care of themselves.

They’ll be fine if I don’t fly for 6-9 months?
@Zinnia
A few months is one thing, but 9 months is a long time. Ideally, they should stay between 40-60% charge. If you’re storing them that long, just check every 3 months and make sure they’re around half power.
@Scout
Got it, thanks!
You can get battery chargers on Amazon that let you charge to 100% for flying or 60% for storage.

Most DJI batteries self-discharge to a safe storage level automatically. More details here: https://support.dji.com/help/content?customId=en-us03400006548&spaceId=34&re=US&lang=en
