Best beginner drones under $200... which one to start with?

Hey all! I’m looking for a good practice drone to get into flying without dropping too much cash. I’d rather not start with a high-end drone just in case I crash it into a tree or something :sweat_smile:. Anyone have recommendations for budget-friendly drones under $200? Ideally, one that’s easy to fly but not too ‘automated,’ so I actually learn how to control it myself!

For sure check out the DJI Neo! It’s $199, pretty easy to fly, and has a lot of the basics to help you get started.

I saw that one mentioned before! Does it come with a remote controller, or do you have to buy that separately?

@Storm
Unfortunately, the remote isn’t included, so you’ll have to use your phone unless you buy it separately. It’s a bit of an extra cost if you’re wanting the full experience with a controller.

@Storm
I think the remote is like an extra $50 or so, right? Might push the total cost over $200 if you’re on a tight budget.

If you’re okay with something smaller and cheaper, the Potensic A20 Mini is a good option at $35. Nothing fancy, but it’ll give you the basics.

Does it have any kind of camera, though?

@Payton
Nope, no camera. It’s really just for practicing flying around. But it does have a hover feature, which is nice when you’re first learning.

@Payton
Yeah, that’s the point—it’s a basic flyer to learn the controls before upgrading.

I’d recommend the Tello drone if you can find it. It’s usually around $159, so it’s on the higher end of budget drones, but it’s actually pretty solid for practicing!

What makes the Tello worth the price? I’ve heard it’s good, but IDK why it’s more expensive than other beginner drones.

@Storm
The Tello uses DJI parts even though it’s made by Ryze. It also has a decent camera (5MP) and a smart vision positioning system that helps with hovering. Plus, you can even do some coding with it!

@Storm
Only downside is it might be discontinued soon, so grab one while you can if you’re interested.

Anyone tried the Tomzon Mini Drone? I heard it’s similar to the Potensic A20 but with LED lights for night flying. Not a big feature but might be fun for practicing.

I’ve tried it! It’s decent, just a bit pricier than the A20. But yeah, the LED lights are pretty cool for visibility at night. Just don’t expect anything beyond basic flying.

@Finley
Thanks! I’ll probably stick to daylight practice, but it sounds fun!

Are the LED lights distracting or just more for fun?

@Storm
Mostly for fun, not super distracting. It’s a nice little feature for a low-budget drone.

If you’re worried about crashing, remember all these drones are under 250g, so no FAA registration required! Just stay out of restricted airspace.

Good point! Super helpful if you’re just trying to fly for fun and learn the basics.
