I’m considering rigging up something to drop a 0.5l can of beer (weighing around half a kilo), but I’m unsure if my 5 inch 4s drone with 45 A ESC can handle that without overheating. Planning to fly it gently, no high-throttle stunts.
Anyone think this is doable? Or will the extra weight put too much strain on my ESC?
A GoPro 10 weighs about 153 grams, and a 1500mAh 4s battery is around 190g. If you switch to an 800mAh battery (assuming a short flight), you could cut down about 250g. Also, maybe consider a 330ml or even 250ml can if it’s still too heavy.
I think it should be alright. I remember someone flying a Corona bottle on a cinewhoop, and those tend to overheat with just a GoPro on board.
My larger 5" drone has an all-up weight near 700g, so adding 500g would almost double that. On a steady flight, my four motors usually pull around 30-40A. Even if you estimated the current might quadruple, you’d still be within the limits of a 45A ESC.
Try adding current monitoring to your OSD and test it out. And when it’s done, please share some photos or a video! I’m interested in seeing how other people design similar setups – I’ve been thinking of using the PIT switch on some of my FCs for a release mechanism.
