I want to lift a mirrorless camera weighing about 500g with my DJI FPV drone. Has anyone tried something like this before?
I was considering trying this with my 300g mirrorless, but I’m a bit hesitant. The quality boost in footage would be amazing, as long as the drone’s vibrations don’t cause a jello effect.
I think using a GoPro DJI FPV adapter plus an adapter to mount a 1/4" camera might work. If you try it, let us know how it goes!
As for the weight, I believe it could handle 500g, though I’d suggest testing it by gradually adding weight to see how it manages.
This might not be the answer you’re hoping for, but the DJI FPV wasn’t designed to carry heavy loads. I’ve even seen error messages from my goggles when adding certain accessories, especially in windy conditions.
The DJI FPV is calibrated for specific weight limits and will likely give warnings if you overload it. There are other drones built for carrying extra weight, but if you try it with the DJI FPV, be ready for possible errors and reduced stability.
Adding more weight may affect flight performance. If you’re only doing a simple shot and no stunts, it could work, but be prepared for potential issues.

I don’t plan to do flips or anything extreme, just a simple steady shot.

I once delivered a food container using an 18-foot cam strap attached to my drone. Total payload was around 354g. While it wasn’t exactly the same setup, it managed the weight without issues.
Edit: The strap and container might have weighed slightly less than 500g, but the swaying load added some unique force.
@Terryanne
That sounds like it would have made a cool video!

Yeah, I had to swing the load to reach a third-floor balcony. Quite an operation!

So was it really close to 300g? I tried calculating, and it seems less than 500g.

The metal buckle on the strap added a fair bit of weight.

He probably meant kilograms, not grams.
@Haze
If you’re set on trying this, start with a test flight. The drone might handle a steady lift, but securing the camera is crucial. Watch out for stability issues with the weight.
I’ve seen someone mount a 360 camera on the back of a DJI FPV, but I’d recommend caution to avoid any chance of detachment mid-flight. Always test it in a safe, open area.
@Skylar
I tried carrying around 800g for a friend on the third floor in mild wind. The drone managed it, but battery life was down to around 5-6 minutes. I wouldn’t push it much beyond that.

Planning to do a new video soon, but so far my drone has flown fine with an added 400g load. You can see some of it here if you’re interested.
I recently tried lifting a Sony ZV-E10 with my DJI FPV, and it worked fine. I wouldn’t push it too much, though.
