Can I fly a micro drone in Vancouver area parks?

Hey everyone, I’m wondering if it’s okay to legally fly a micro drone in parks around the Greater Vancouver area, like Burnaby, Surrey, or Coquitlam. I’ve heard a lot about municipal bylaws banning drones in these areas, but I still see people mentioning they fly micro drones in those parks anyway.

Is there some kind of exception for micro drones I might not know about? If not, where do you usually fly yours? It’s been hard finding a good spot near me, so I’d appreciate any tips or advice!

I’d say stick to the rules, even if others seem to get away with it. They’ve just been lucky not to get caught so far.

Micro drones are classified as drones weighing under 250 g. The controller weight doesn’t count, but anything attached to the drone, like cameras or cages, does.

If you’re flying a micro drone, you don’t need to register it or get a drone pilot certificate. These drones aren’t subject to the same rules as larger ones, but you still have to avoid flying recklessly or putting people or aircraft at risk.

Here are some good practices:

  • Always keep the drone in your line of sight.
  • Don’t fly above 400 feet.
  • Keep a safe distance from people.
  • Stay far from airports, heliports, and aerodromes.
  • Avoid flying near infrastructure like bridges or communication towers.
  • Stay clear of aircraft at all times.
  • Inspect your drone before every flight.
  • Don’t fly too far from the remote’s range.
  • Avoid special events or areas with flight restrictions.

If something feels risky, it’s best not to fly. Play it safe and enjoy your drone responsibly!

You probably don’t need to stress about municipal bylaws if it’s a micro drone.
