Can I fly my drone in Brooklyn without issues?

I have a DJI Mini 4k (under 250g) and want to fly it in Brooklyn. My takeoff area has no geo-zone restrictions in the app. Are there any other rules I should know that the app doesn’t mention? I plan to stay under 400 feet and within line of sight, but does ‘line of sight’ mean I need to see it clearly or just be able to spot it?

Visual Line of Sight (VLOS) means you must maintain clear visual contact with your drone without tools like binoculars.

For flying in NYC, it’s more complicated. The FAA rules apply (check apps like Aloft or AutoPylot for airspace authorizations), but NYC laws prohibit taking off or landing drones almost anywhere in the city without a permit. You’ll need a Part 107 certificate to get that permit, and most recreational flying isn’t allowed except in specific areas like FAA Recognized Identification Areas (FRIAs). Some state parks within NYC may also allow drone flights with separate permits.

Where can I find more details about city laws? The DJI Fly app doesn’t show anything about local restrictions.

Read AJP’s comment carefully. NYC is a tough place to fly. Besides airspace rules, you’ll need a police permit. Without a Part 107 certificate, it’s almost impossible. Recreational flying is pretty much off the table there.

The term ‘Visual Line of Sight’ might confuse some people, but it means you need to be able to clearly see your drone to ensure safe operation, such as avoiding aircraft. The wording in FAA regulations can sometimes be unclear, but that’s the practical meaning.

You need to be able to see the drone at all times so you can avoid collisions with things like helicopters.
