Can I fly my drone over Pompeii in Italy for personal use?

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to visit the archeological site of Pompeii next year and I want to take some photos and videos with my Mini 4 Pro or Air 3S, purely for personal use (not for commercial purposes). I checked the D-Flight website and it seems that the area is open for flying (up to 120 meters, as per European rules).

Does anyone know if it’s OK to fly a drone there? Thanks in advance!

I can’t believe Pompeii isn’t a strict no-fly zone. I couldn’t find any proof that it is either…
But then again, all of urban France is a no-fly zone, and that’s not marked on the DJI map.

That’s why I trust maps from the authorities controlling airspace, not DJI’s maps. For France, for example, check the official airspace restrictions here: Géoportail. Flying drones in France seems like a hassle…

@Blair
Aviation rules in France are a real headache.

Yeah, that’s why I moved to Norway in my 20s :sweat_smile:

Yes, you can fly there if you follow the rules. I don’t think you can launch directly from inside the park, but there’s a lot to see around it.

D-Flight is the only official site to check for flight restrictions. Any national park or property that wants to restrict drone flying needs to get approval from ENAC (the Italian FAA), and any restrictions get uploaded to D-Flight in real-time.

If the area in Pompeii allows flying up to 120 meters, then it’s fine to fly there. But be cautious of tourists around as you might end up violating the A1/A3 rule of not flying over uninvolved people.

@Lennon
Thanks a lot for the info! It’s good to know the rules are clear in Italy. I’ll be careful to follow the A1/A3 rules as I have my license for that.
Just wondering, though, do security or police in Pompeii know the drone rules? I’ve had issues with this in my home country (Belgium).

@Blair
I’m not sure about Pompeii specifically, but in general, police and security staff aren’t trained on the actual drone laws. They usually just follow their own protocols.
