Can I replace the BLW04 battery in my dead DJI RC myself?

Hey everyone,

So my DJI RC (model RM330) just stopped turning on. From what I’ve found online, it sounds like the internal BLW04 battery is the likely culprit.

DJI wants over €70 to replace it, but from what I’ve seen, the battery itself isn’t even worth €10. That seems like a bit much, especially since it’s out of warranty.

Has anyone here replaced the BLW04 on their own? I’ve been looking everywhere for a way to buy it, but haven’t had any luck finding one with a reasonable price or quantity. I’d really appreciate any pointers on where to get it and if it’s actually doable to change it safely.

Thanks!

Try to find a teardown video — some DJI controllers use 2x 18650 or 21700 Li-ion cells (like the FPV RC2).

Did it suddenly stop working, or was it sitting around uncharged for a while?

If there’s no LED activity at all, it could be the BMS or just a loose wire inside.

@Vince
I found this teardown that shows the inside: https://imgur.com/a/ICVmVCR. Looks like it uses two 18650 cells connected with a custom plug marked WM231.

I did find something similar on Alibaba: https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/WM231-for-DJI-C5-RC231-remote_1600497548784.html, but they want me to order 20 minimum, so that’s kind of a no-go.

And yeah, it was sitting uncharged for a long time. It works fine when plugged in, lights and all, but won’t hold power without the charger — so I’m guessing the battery’s deeply drained.

@Tatum
Then yeah, sounds like you just need to swap the 18650 cells. You’re looking at something like 2300–2500mAh at 3.7V, around 9.36Wh.

If you can get something close to that spec, the battery meter should still read it okay.

You could try vape shops — they usually stock 18650s in that range. Just be careful with soldering or how the cells are attached.

Since it works while plugged in, two new cells should get you running again.
