Could DJI drones really stop working in the US?

I know it’s a big ‘what if’, but I’d really hate to upgrade my drone only for it to stop working later.

I’d say about 42%.

Nice one.

Let freedom fly!

Zero percent. There are companies making DJI-style drones elsewhere and millions of DJI drones already flying in the US.

That’s not really the question. I think there’s a 50/50 shot that DJI drones won’t be allowed to fly in the US by 2026.

What’s your source? Just vibes?

@Valentine
Where are you getting that from?

Depends on what side of the bed I wake up on December 23rd — left or right.

So basically just guessing then.

@Phoenix
Pretty much. The way things are now, everything’s run on guesses and fear. You try to make real plans, and you’re just wasting your time.

I get that things feel unstable, but has the US ever actually banned people from using stuff they already own? Even with guns, it’s mostly buybacks. This sounds more like panic than reality.

@Phoenix
Actually, yeah, they’ve banned a bunch of stuff. You in the US?

Those buyback programs don’t really work. Crooks just dump stolen weapons and get cash. Honest folks don’t give up their gear for a $10 gift card. And yeah, they’ve forced people to throw away legal stuff like bump stocks without even paying them back.

They’ve even banned certain dog breeds in some areas. Laser pointers and other items get stopped at customs.

It’s 2025 now. If it were 2015, I’d say there’s no chance. But things have changed, and pretending otherwise is just ignoring what’s going on.

The government doesn’t even need to ban the drones directly. They could just issue a no-fly zone that blocks DJI drones and call it a day. They wouldn’t have to brick them or confiscate anything. Most DJI owners follow the law, so they’d just stop flying.

Sadly, the people who’d follow the rules would be the ones hurt by the ban — not the folks breaking the law.

@Valentine

So a TFR with no end date that only blocks DJI? That’s not how TFRs work. They’re temporary flight restrictions, not brand-specific bans. Honestly, you’re sounding a bit extreme.

@Valentine
But how would an offline drone just stop flying?

DJI drones still need to check in from time to time. If they don’t, some features stop working or they get restricted.
