Detroit and DJI drones: What’s going on?

Detroit’s drone scene is heating up, with initiatives that reward DJI pilots and showcase innovative tech. Is this the future of drone integration?

They’ve got an app that takes over your drone’s flight controls while you still act as the pilot-in-command. Feels strange to not be actively flying it yourself.

Not sure how legal this is. If things go wrong—like a crash due to bad connections or coding—it might not last long.

@Westley
Yeah, it’s a bit shady. It only works with certain DJI Mini models and Android phones. I’m curious to see how many people sign up.

What about people with controllers that have built-in screens? Can they still use this?

@Mai
It’s designed for Android phones with the basic controller setup, not the ones with built-in screens.

Drone data can be useful, but it needs to be very specific to justify the cost. Some infrastructure work might still be cheaper done manually. The use of blockchain here just seems unnecessary, and the overall pitch feels like a solution searching for a problem.

In short, Detroit’s partnering with a couple of companies to use DJI drones for city planning, emergency response, and more. Pilots can earn decent money, and the city wants to lead in aerial tech innovation.

I worked with Spexi last summer in Canada. It’s a cool platform, and I made pretty good money with it.

That sounds worth trying out.

Sounds sketchy to me.

It might just be a startup chasing investment by using buzzwords like blockchain. They’re trying to make themselves look cutting-edge.

Using blockchain for drone data feels like overkill. What’s the real advantage?

How do I sign up for this?

Why are only DJI drones involved? Other brands can do the same or better.

It’s easier for them to work with one well-known brand. DJI is a major player, and by sticking with their SDK, the project avoids compatibility issues.

They likely chose DJI because it’s well-established and the drones meet the project’s quality standards.
