DJI Avata 2 vs DJI Flip… which one should I go for?

I’m planning a trip soon and want to capture some awesome aerial footage and group shots with friends—just for fun and social media, not professional content. I’m stuck deciding between the DJI Avata 2 and the DJI Flip.

Here’s the dilemma:

  • Leaning toward the Avata 2 because of its immersive FPV experience and great video quality. The downside is that it requires someone else to operate it, and I know it probably won’t get much use after the trip.
  • Considering the DJI Flip for its portability and easy launch, but I’ve read mixed reviews, especially about controlling it with a phone/tablet instead of a dedicated remote.
  • If I go for the DJI Flip + remote, the price is almost the same as the single battery version of the Avata 2.
  • I’m not a pro pilot and just want something fun and easy to use on my own without needing a second person every time.

Would the DJI Flip be a better long-term choice for casual, solo use? Can it get decent shots with just my phone or should I definitely get the remote? Or should I just go all-in on the Avata 2, despite the learning curve and need for a second person?

Would love to hear from anyone who’s been in a similar situation—especially other casual users or travelers.

I’ve got the A2 and an M4P. Nothing excites like the Avata 2. You can get decent clips with the Flip (though I don’t think the Flip has HYPERLAPSE?), but the Avata takes the experience to a new level. A flat field with a couple of trees becomes a playground in FPV. The key is picking the right music for those videos.

If you want to fly over monuments or cool places and get those typical drone shots, the Flip works. But if you want guaranteed fun, even if the footage isn’t great, the Avata delivers. Flying low and fast over terrain in any weather is incredible.

I love the A2. No buyer’s remorse here.

I’m a solo creator, doing hiking and biking adventures, and I chose the Flip because it follows me around. I used to fly a Mini 1 before the Flip, which taught me the basics. Now I have so many shots where I’m just standing with a controller in hand, but with the Flip, it’s more like having a personal camera crew that follows me while I’m moving. It’s cinematic. The Neo might also be good for you—it does FPV like the Avata and has follow features like the Flip. The image quality isn’t as good, but for casual social media content in good lighting and calm weather, it should be fine.

Okay, Flip - 1, Avata 2 - 0.

I don’t own either, but I’ve flown the Avata 2 quite a bit. It’s a blast. But if group shots with friends are key for you, the Avata might disappoint, unless you don’t mind wearing goggles in the photo. You might be able to use it for selfies, but it’s not really designed for that. The Flip is much more suited for group shots.

I’d go for the A2. You might be able to find a Neo for cheap, like I did, which fills the same role as the Flip but is compatible with Goggles 3 (the Flip isn’t).
