DJI Mini 2 SE vs. Potensic Atom 4K: Which is better for a first-time pilot?

Hi everyone,

I’m excited to start exploring the drone flying hobby and am currently researching beginner-friendly drones. I’ve noticed DJI is a popular brand, so I’ve been considering their mini drones. I also came across the Potensic ATOM, which seems to have great reviews. Both are in a similar price range, so cost isn’t a deciding factor for me.

Between these two options, which would you say is the better and more reliable choice for someone just starting out? I’d also appreciate any recommendations for other beginner drones. Thanks in advance for your advice!

I’d recommend looking at secondhand options for better value. While DJI has a solid reputation and long-term support, the Mini 2 SE is essentially a rebranded original Mini. Deals on newer models like the Mini 3 or Mini 4 might be a better choice.

I’ve used both the Mini 2 and the Potensic Atom 4K. While both are stable platforms for beginners, the Mini 2 performs better in wind and has superior signal transmission. The camera is slightly better on the Mini 2 as well, so I’d go with DJI.

I got the Potensic Atom recently as my first drone, and it’s been fantastic. It’s easy to set up and a lot of fun to fly. I crashed it a couple of times and it survived, so it’s pretty durable for a beginner.

DJI drones are less likely to crash because of their sensors. Definitely something to think about for your next drone.

Good point. I’ll probably go for one with sensors next time, but I’m still having a blast with the Atom!

Consider the Mini 4K. It’s in the same price range as the Mini 2 SE but offers 4K capabilities and an updated sensor.

I started with a refurbished Mini 2 SE I found on eBay for $200. It’s been great and got me into drones. Passed my Part 107 recently!

Congrats on the Part 107! What resources did you use to study?

The Potensic Atom is a solid option, but if you’re open to other ideas, check out the FIMI Mini 3. It has a 1/2-inch Sony sensor, 4K/60fps video, and great range, all for around $300 on sale.

Save up and get a Mini 4 Pro. You’ll outgrow the Mini 2 SE quickly, and the resale value isn’t great.

Definitely go with DJI. The build quality and support make it a better investment for beginners.

Any GPS-enabled drone will be easy to fly. If you’re still looking, check out the Ruko F11GIM2.
