I keep seeing people talk about drone insurance, but like… do I really need it? I get that it’s not required by the FAA, but if you’re flying for work, is it actually necessary? Seems like it could get expensive. Just wondering if it’s worth it or if most people just risk it?
If you’re flying commercially, a lot of clients won’t even hire you without it. They usually ask for a Certificate of Insurance (COI) before signing a contract.

Oh, makes sense. So it’s more about getting jobs than just personal protection?
@Kiran
Yeah, pretty much. Some industries even require certain coverage limits. Like, construction jobs can need $5M+ policies.
If your drone crashes into a car or injures someone, you could be paying out of pocket for repairs or legal fees. Liability insurance helps with that.

Is that different from hull insurance? I see both mentioned a lot.
@Dezi
Yeah, liability covers damage to others, hull insurance covers your own drone if it crashes or gets stolen.
Some countries actually require drone insurance to fly legally, even if the FAA doesn’t.

Oh damn, didn’t know that. So if I’m flying outside the U.S., I should check the rules?
@Kiran
Yep, definitely. Some places won’t even let you take off without proof of insurance.
If you’re just flying for fun, you probably don’t need it. But for business, it’s kinda a no-brainer.

Makes sense. Do most people go for monthly coverage or per-flight insurance?
@Kiran
Depends! If you’re flying often, annual coverage is cheaper. But if you’re only doing gigs here and there, on-demand insurance (like $10/hr) is a better deal.
SkyWatch has plans starting at $44/mo for liability coverage. If you’re flying gigs, it’s not too bad compared to the risks.

That’s not as pricey as I thought. Do they cover theft too?
@Kiran
Only if you have hull insurance. Liability won’t cover stolen drones.
