I’m trying to find out which insurance providers and coverage terms people are using for drone work. Or maybe a better question is: what changes did you make to your insurance when you started adding drone services?
I’ve always had basic business coverage through Farmers, using a local broker. But right now, they’re telling me that adding drone insurance would be pretty useless, pricey, and involve more paperwork than I expected. For instance, they mentioned needing to contact all neighboring houses before flying… is that normal?
I’m fine with not covering the drone itself but want to make sure I’m protected on the liability side. Would appreciate hearing about your experiences. Thanks!
Contacting all neighboring houses before flying? That sounds ridiculous.
I use Hiscox for my insurance. Also, there are companies that offer per-flight insurance, so you just pay a few bucks each time you fly if you need coverage. Might be worth Googling to see what’s available.
Per-flight insurance could be a good option. When we first approached an insurance broker, they quoted a crazy high number just because of the drone. We asked them to remove the drone from the coverage, and they still refused since we had already mentioned it. We ended up going to a different broker and just left out the drone part, then insured it separately.
I don’t get why your broker is saying it’s all useless, expensive, or requires a lot of paperwork. There are plenty of providers with decent coverage options that don’t have those issues.
I pay Hartford $1,100 a year for $5 million in coverage. That includes equipment insurance, liability, and errors & omissions. With the number of flights I do, paying per-flight insurance would be way too expensive.
