I’m looking for a drone for a family member as a Christmas gift. They don’t have a smartphone, so I need something similar to the DJI Mini SE in terms of price and functionality, but it must be usable without a phone. Any suggestions?
You could look into the DJI Mini 3 Pro with the RC or the Mini 4 Pro with the RC2. Both remotes have built-in screens, so you don’t need a phone to fly them.
Just make sure someone checks for FAA restrictions using the B4UFly app before flying, even if it’s done ahead of time from another device.
The DJI Mini 3 has an option with an RC controller that has a screen built in. Might be able to find a good deal on eBay, especially with people upgrading to the Mini 4 Pro.
You’re going to need a Mini 3, Mini 3 Pro, or Mini 4 Pro with an RC/RC2 controller for that, but they’re definitely more expensive than the Mini SE. And even then, they’ll still need to use a phone for checking no-fly zones.
Go for the DJI Mini 3, Mini 3 Pro, or Mini 4 Pro.
Look into the DJI Mini 3 or Mini 4 Pro with the RC or RC2 remote that has a built-in screen, so you won’t need a phone. Autel also offers drones with smart controllers. If you’re on a budget, try finding a used DJI Mini 3 with the RC remote or consider a Hubsan X4 FPV drone, which has a built-in display and is more affordable.
I don’t want to connect my phone to anything from Chinese companies! There has to be a better option.
If you can stretch your budget a bit, go for the Mini 4. I upgraded from the Mini 3 Pro, and I’m loving it even more.
What’s your budget?

I’m hoping to stay around $200-$400.

To my knowledge, there aren’t any drones with built-in screens in that price range. You might need to increase the budget or consider a used option.

Honestly, with that budget, your best chance is finding a used DJI Mini 3 with the RC controller that has a screen. Try checking eBay, local Facebook Marketplace listings, or drone buy/sell groups online. There aren’t many options under $300 that are good quality and don’t require a phone.
Both DJI and Autel offer smart controllers that let you fly without a phone.
For an adult, go for the Mini 3 Pro or 4 Pro. But if this is for a kid, consider a Hubsan X4 FPV—it has a built-in screen.
