FAA rules for drones… is this right?

I’m a bit lost here. I know any drone over 0.55 lbs needs to be registered with the FAA. I’m planning to buy a drone, and the product description says, ‘FAA certified and fly with no worries.’ What does this mean? Do I still have to register it? The product info says: ‘The Bingchat AE86 GPS drone has completed certification and complies with the FAA Declaration of Compliance. You can fly unhindered.’ Can someone help me understand this?

This kind of question pops up a lot. Have you checked the FAQ or pinned threads on this forum? They might have the answers you’re looking for.

I couldn’t find weight details for this drone, but just a heads-up—these no-name brands usually repackage generic drones that can be found cheaper elsewhere. If a drone costs less than $250, you might not want to spend more than $30 on it.

@Zenith
Never buy a drone that doesn’t clearly state its weight.

If it’s over 249 grams, you need to register it and have remote ID.

You can fly drones over 0.55 lbs, but they need to be registered. If it’s for personal use, no big deal. But if you want to fly commercially, you’ll need the Part 107 certification.

I thought remote ID is required even for hobby flying if the drone is over 0.55 lbs?

@Sloan
If it’s registered, it needs remote ID, regardless of the weight.

@Sloan
I have my Part 107 and a few drones. All of them require remote ID, no matter the size. But you don’t need Part 107 unless you’re flying commercially. Correct me if I’m wrong—I’m just sharing what I’ve learned.

It probably just means the drone has remote ID built-in.

You can check the FAA website for a list of drones and standalone remote ID modules that are approved.

Remote ID modules usually cost about $200, so that should be easy to spot in the price.

I’ve seen them for $29 on Amazon.

@noa
Looks like I’ve been shopping in the wrong places!

If we’re talking about the same model, the AE86 Pro Max GPS drone weighs 1.32 lbs. That means it needs to be registered and have remote ID.

  • ‘FAA CERTIFICATED COMPLETED’: The Bingchat AE86 GPS drone has completed certification and complies with the FAA Declaration of Compliance. You can fly unhindered with no worry. Any question, please contact us through the email on the Guide Page in the APP.’

This is mostly marketing fluff. If it’s over 250 grams, you’ll still need to register it to be compliant.

@Wynn
You don’t need Part 107 to fly a drone over 250 grams. You just need to register it.

@Wynn
Right, you only need to register it and have remote ID. Part 107 is for commercial flying.

How are you spreading misinformation like this and still a top 1% commenter?

You don’t have to be correct to be a top commenter. You just have to post a lot.
