Flying drones in spring and summer—what’s different?

I’ve been flying my drone for about 6-7 weeks now, but only in winter. Not many birds or bugs to worry about. For those of you who’ve flown in the spring and summer, are insects or other things a big issue? What’s different compared to flying in the cold? Other than shorter battery life and stronger winds in winter, it seems like a pretty good time to fly.

I’d love to hear your experiences or tips. I have a Mini 4K and live in the northeast United States.

In colder weather, battery life is shorter. You might notice you can fly longer in the warmer months.

I was wondering about that! I flew in Texas once, and it seemed like the flight time was a bit longer, but I wasn’t really paying attention to it.

It depends on your location. I live in the desert, and if I don’t fly early in the morning or late in the evening, the heat can damage the drone and batteries.

Good point. Have you had any issues with bugs, though? Late evenings here can be full of them.

@Jensen
Not really. The climate here doesn’t have many bugs, so it hasn’t been a problem for me.

Fair enough.

I think summer is a much better time to fly. Winter can be beautiful, but it lacks the colors you get in summer. One thing to watch out for is how the sun affects your footage—ND filters can really help.

@Asa
I’m so excited for summer! I have a bike, so I’m planning to ride and explore while flying. It’s going to be great.

@Asa
Where do you get your ND filters from?

Freewell makes some good ones that are cheaper than the DJI-branded filters. There are a few other good brands too.

I’ll check them out. Thanks!
