Flying over private property?

Is it okay for me to fly over private property like my neighbors do, without taking pictures? I will use my DJI Mavic Mini 2 as an example.

Flying your DJI Mavic Mini 2 over private property can be legal. It is important to note that:

  • You can fly your drone over private property as long as you don’t invade privacy, cause damage, or endanger people. The FAA allows drone operations in airspace above 400 feet.
  • Even if you are not taking pictures, flying over someone’s property can still raise privacy issues. It is best to avoid flying too low or hovering over private areas to respect your neighbors’ privacy.
  • Always prioritize safety by avoiding flying over people, moving vehicles, or emergency operations.

Finally, keep in mind that some states and localities have additional regulations. For example, they might have specific rules about flying over residential areas or near certain facilities. It’s a good idea to check your local laws to ensure compliance.

As long as the drone remains in the pilot’s visual line of sight and does not impede the owner of the property’s reasonable expectation of privacy, it is permissible to fly over private land. But there are some guidelines that need to be adhered to.

You are entirely correct. When flying over private land, it’s important to make sure the drone stays in the pilot’s visible line of sight and to honor the property owner’s right to privacy. To guarantee responsible and safe drone use, it’s critical to constantly abide by the rules and regulations in existence. I appreciate you reminding me.
