I’ve been flying toy drones for a while (until they break, of course). I’m looking to get into FPV and am super interested in freestyle flying. The only problem is the short battery life on most drones in my price range ($100-$200). I really want something that lasts 15-30 minutes, but I don’t want to buy a ton of extra batteries and chargers either since that adds up. Any suggestions for drones under $350 with good battery life? Or any solid batteries/chargers I should look into?
A lot of people worry about battery life when starting out, but trust me, FPV is way more demanding than you think. At first, you won’t be able to keep it in the air for very long before you crash. Even 8-10 minutes is a long time! I’d recommend getting a controller and practicing on a sim first. You’ll improve, and the flight times will make more sense as you go.
Totally agree with DWT. When you’re actually flying, it’s way more intense than you expect. You’ll be focused, and your heart rate will be up. The battery life will feel long enough, trust me.
I’ve been using simulators for a week now, and it’s surprising how draining it is! I didn’t expect my hands and thumbs to get so tired after a short session, even though I can game for hours on end.
You’re approaching FPV with the wrong mindset. Even 6 minutes is plenty for freestyle flying. When you’re just starting out, you’ll probably crash in less than a minute. Even as you improve, freestyle is mentally exhausting. Most of us pack multiple batteries and do a few flights at a time, practicing and having fun until we break a prop or need a breather.
I get where you’re coming from. While most people will tell you that shorter battery life is normal for freestyle, if you want longer flight times, I can suggest a few drones. These are more for long-range flights but can handle some freestyle:
These are all under $350 and more focused on battery life. Just keep in mind that they’re not top-tier freestyle performers but are solid for longer flights.
First thing’s first, invest in a good charger. Batteries are not where you want to save money, and you’ll need a few. Once you start flying FPV, you’ll understand why these smaller batteries are standard. The flight times make a lot more sense once you get into it!
