I want to start a drone business, but I don’t know where to begin. I posted an ad on FB Marketplace but got no responses. I’m thinking about contacting hotels to see if they want footage for commercials. I also tried selling on sites like Shutterstock, but nobody is buying. Any advice on what else I could do? Hotels usually work with preferred vendors. Two important questions: Do you have your Part 107 license? Are you insured? No large company will let you fly around their property without both of these. I’m a commercial photographer, and you’ll need a few million in liability insurance.
A lot of people with drones think about starting a business, but unless you have amazing photo/video/mapping skills, you’re just another person with a drone. A business is more than just having the tool.
Get your Part 107 license and reach out to realtors. Also, practice video editing and maybe start a YouTube channel. After Hurricane Ian in Florida, I used my drone to help people inspect their properties. I said donations were appreciated but not required, and I ended up getting some money for it. Start small until you find your niche.
I have a YouTube channel with 600k subscribers, and I make around $200k a month from it, so I have experience in building a brand. I just don’t know how to apply that to a drone business.

Instead of hotels, try approaching construction companies. They often need aerial footage for project planning, timelapses, and progress updates. You could also reach out to local governments or municipalities.

First, crash your drone and lose money. Then get your Part 107 license and spend more on gear. Or find work in agriculture. Or, if you have rich parents, they can fund your hobby!

You can make money by offering aerial photos of people’s houses. Charge $20 for the basic photo, and $50 for a framed print. You could make some decent side income with enough volume.
