How High Can You Fly a Drone in a Deep Canyon?

Hey people…,.

I have a question about flying drones in deep canyons, specifically in a hypothetical scenario where it would be allowed. I know it’s illegal in many places, but let’s say it was permitted to fly drones in the Grand Canyon.

Considering that the Grand Canyon is about 6,000 feet deep at its deepest point, would drone pilots still be limited to the standard 400 feet above ground level? Or could you potentially fly to the rim of the canyon plus an additional 400 feet?

I’m really curious about how elevation and drone regulations work in unique landscapes like this. Would love to hear any insights or experiences you might have

Imagine flying a drone in a place like the Grand Canyon, where it’s super deep. Even if drones were allowed, you’d still have to follow the standard 400-foot limit above the ground. So, if you’re at the bottom, you’d be limited to 400 feet above you, not the rim plus 400.

Thus, you can lawfully fly 400 feet above and alongside the canyon’s edge if you’re operating a commercial aircraft. You would be in violation of the regulations if you flew farther than 400 feet.

In a deep canyon, you can fly a drone up to 400 feet above your point of takeoff, not the canyon floor, according to FAA rules. Always check for specific local regulations that might further restrict drone flight altitudes.
