If DJI isn’t allowed to sell drones in the US anymore, will people still be able to fly the ones they already own? Or could DJI block them through a software update?
I’m thinking about buying a backup drone now, but I’m not sure if that even makes sense. Should I just start looking at other brands?
If it really comes down to a full ban, I’m set. I’ve got an MP4 FlyMore, RC2 controller with screen, DJI Goggles 3, the RC FPV motion controller, a capture card cable so I can mirror the display to an iPad, 3D-printed tripod mounts for everything, a hard case, and now a Neo too. Once these things disappear from shelves, this kit could be worth like $6K. Might be a good time to sell if someone’s looking for a deal!
It really depends on what kind of ban it is. Is it just stopping imports, or is it banning flights in US airspace? Is it just for federal workers or everyone?
Worst case, yeah — you wouldn’t be able to fly at all. Best case, the hobby just slowly dies out. If the FAA ever sets up a permanent nationwide TFR that bans DJI drones, that’s pretty much a full ban.
Some folks on this forum find ways around TFRs, but most of us would probably be grounded. And suddenly, all that talk about jail time for breaking TFRs would just vanish. lol
Technically, DJI could brick the drones — but would they really do that? If they’re banned anyway, they might as well unlock all flight limits, turn off remote ID, and walk away. Why stick to the rules of a country that just banned you?
