Is the Flip worth it? Or should I go for something else?

Hi,

I’ve been looking to get a drone for a while now, and recently I came across the DJI Flip as a potential option. I can’t seem to find many reviews on it though, most people just say it looks ugly or they’re not interested because they already have the Mini 4K or something.

I travel a lot and want something to take with me for fun (not for influencer purposes), and since I’m an amateur photographer, the camera quality is really important to me. I’m based in Switzerland, but I’ll be moving to the US for a year or two soon, so I know there are different drone regulations in different places.

If the Flip isn’t the one, which drones should I consider instead?

There are probably thousands of threads on this forum and even more videos on YouTube. What do you mean you can’t find a review? Did you even try looking?

I have one, and based on what you’re saying, it sounds like you’d enjoy it. It’s a bit more sensitive to high winds and louder than open-prop drones, but as a photographer, I think I made the right choice.

Just got the Flip 3 weeks ago. I’ve got a background in flying analog FPV freestyle/racing quads, from whoops to 5-inch drones.

I wanted something that could follow me while I do extreme stuff. Took it along the coast of Puerto Rico recently, flew near surfers in strong winds. Last week I went snowboarding and took the Flip along to follow me on open trails and tree-covered ones. It handled the wind better than my Hover X1, but it had trouble keeping up at fast speeds—had to just take it easy with the carving, but that’s expected with such a light drone. The video came out great though, you couldn’t even tell it was windy!

Just make sure to tether it with your phone or controller if it’s windy! I had trouble landing it once without either, but connected it mid-air to tell it to land, which was cool.

I have an Air 3S, Avata 2, Flip, and Neo—covers all the bases for me. Of those, the Flip does more on its own than any of the others. If you want just one drone and plan to travel, I’d definitely recommend the Flip FMC with the RC2 controller.

There are probably 50 super detailed reviews of every aspect of the Flip on YouTube. Are you sure you couldn’t find anything?

I don’t have one, but I know it’s a great entry-level drone. Honestly, it’s probably better than most entry-level drones since it has the same camera as the Mini 4 Pro. Its only downside is that it’s light and a bit unstable in high winds, but that’s all listed on the website. There are plenty of good reviews on YouTube from people who really know their stuff.

I’d suggest the Neo over the Flip. They have similar use cases, and even though the Neo doesn’t fold, it’s pretty compact. Plus, you can use it with the Goggles 3, which the Flip doesn’t support.

The camera quality isn’t the same, though. The Flip is better for what OP needs.

@Oli
It still has a good camera, just with a wider use case.

Agree, especially if you’re into FPV stuff!

I got the Flip because I only care about stills photography. The Mini Pro 4 was twice the price with the same camera but loads of features I’d never use, so it didn’t make sense for me. It is loud and struggles in the wind, so keep that in mind. You can check my post history for a few photos I’ve taken with it. You can still get some great shots with some effort.
