Just bought my first drone, any tips for a newbie?

Get Care Refresh and take it slow. Even when you think you’ve got the hang of it, take it easy. If you’re in the US, register and take the TRUST test first.

Practice, practice, practice. Use a full battery each flight doing simple maneuvers until you’re confident.

Learn the rules so you don’t get fined or deal with the police. And know that cops don’t always know the drone laws either.

It’s like learning to drive. Practice takeoff and landing close to where you can see it. Take it slow and get used to the controls. A landing pad can help.

Adjust the controller buttons to make it easier for you.

DJI drones mostly fly themselves, but you still need to be cautious:

  • Don’t fly near airports or no-fly zones. Use apps to check allowed areas.
  • Follow privacy laws.
  • Avoid flying over crowds or disturbing wildlife.
  • Keep your drone in sight.
  • Don’t fly indoors.
  • Practice landing in your hand, it’s useful but scary at first.
  • Change scratched props and be mindful of flying in high winds.

@Remington
DJI’s geofencing usually handles this, but sometimes it’s too much.

Geofencing isn’t always accurate. There are helipads near me that DJI doesn’t mark as no-fly zones.

You should have waited for the Air3S.

Don’t practice over water… it’s a rookie mistake and lots of people still do it :man_facepalming:.

Use your drone regularly. I had the Mavic Air but didn’t use it much and the batteries died from sitting unused. Now I need new ones.

Avoid trees and power lines. Not your friends!

Got that thing strapped in! Lol!

Nice!

Buckle up.

Try not to crash :+1:

Fishing line got my first drone. It was impossible to see and tangled my drone, sending it into a lake. I got it back but it was ruined. It happens fast.

Get the DJI care plan.

Don’t crash.

Fly high to practice your maneuvers and avoid hitting anything.
