Just got a Mini 3… what should I practice first?

I recently got a Mini 3, and it’s my first drone ever! I’ve been flying it around my neighborhood and some open areas, but I’d love some advice on what to practice or focus on.

I really want to improve my flying skills and learn how to get better at recording footage. What were the first things you learned or practiced with your drone? How did you improve? I’ve downloaded Davinci Resolve and Gyroflow, so I know I’ve got a lot to learn. Thanks in advance!

First off, have fun! Then, practice your stick control and smooth, cinematic movements to make your footage look awesome. Also, complete the TRUST program if you’re in the U.S.—it’s free and will teach you important rules to stay out of trouble. Oh, and don’t let people who like to judge ruin your fun. Some folks can be pretty harsh for no reason.

@Harlyn
What’s the TRUST program?

Check if it’s legal to fly over traffic in your area—it probably isn’t. Also, be aware that local law enforcement might have tools to track your drone and location if they want to. Something to keep in mind!

@Jace
I didn’t even think of this. Good to know, thanks.

If you’re in the U.S. or Europe, you might need a license. Make sure to check your local laws.

I don’t need a license where I live.

In that case, check out tutorials on cinematic drone movements. There are lots of great ones on YouTube.

Welcome to the drone world! First, complete the TRUST program if you haven’t already. Don’t fly over people or moving cars. For practice, watch aerial shots from others and try to recreate them in a large open area, like a field. Adjust your controller settings to suit your preferences, especially for smoother movements. Start with simple shots and work your way up.

As for your video, if it’s yours, it’s helpful! Practice makes perfect, so keep at it.

@Ozzie
Thanks for the advice! And yeah, the video is mine, just wanted to share how I’m doing so far. No need to call it dumb, though. lol

Sorry about that! I thought you meant it wasn’t yours. If it is, then that’s great—keep practicing and try to refine those skills!

This forum has a lot of people acting like hall monitors. Doesn’t matter what you post—there’s always someone nitpicking. Just do your thing and have fun!

Practice makes perfect. Start small and work your way up!

I’m fairly new too, and I started by practicing in an open field to get the hang of the controls. I also do little photo missions to learn how to adjust the camera and use ND filters. When it comes to video, practice on whatever subject is available and set realistic goals. Have fun and enjoy the process!

Start by learning your local drone laws—flying over cars isn’t a good look. Practice in an open field, and watch tutorials to improve your skills. Just take it step by step.
