Just got the Mini 4 Pro… Any tips for a first-time drone flyer?

Super excited to have just picked up my Mini 4 Pro! It’s my first drone, so I’m open to any advice, tips, or things to watch out for. I want to start off on the right foot!

Make sure to watch a variety of tutorial videos before connecting it to your phone. There’s a lot to learn!

Thanks, I’ll definitely do that. I don’t want to crash on my very first flight!

@Ash
That’s a great mindset! Also, go through the manual or DJI’s official tutorials. YouTube videos can be helpful, but sometimes they skip steps or include unnecessary info. The official materials are very thorough and can save you from common mistakes.

@Ash
Be extra careful in sports mode—it turns off all the sensors. I learned that the hard way and crashed after a month. Definitely get DJI Care as soon as you can!

Get DJI Care Refresh before even opening the box! Seriously, one of the best tips for a new drone owner.

What exactly is Care Refresh?

It’s a protection plan that covers accidental damage or loss. Definitely worth the cost!

@Ali
Nice! Can I get it if I bought the drone at Costco, or does it have to be through DJI?

You can buy it within 24 hours of activating your drone with DJI. When you register your drone, you should get the option to purchase it.

@Ali
Actually, you can get it even later. I got mine a month and a half after buying my drone, then crashed it within a week. It saved me!

Didn’t you have to send them proof that the drone was still in working condition?

@Ali
Yeah, I had to send in some flight data, but it was worth it. Got a replacement drone in just four days!

Totally agree. With how expensive these drones are, Care Refresh is a no-brainer.

Take it slow at first. Go to an open space like a park with no trees or power lines nearby. Get a feel for the controls and practice simple maneuvers.

For filming, remember: pans should be much slower than you think. Try cinematic mode and practice steady movements. Even small adjustments can show up in your footage. It takes time to master!

@Phoenix
That’s great advice, thank you! I can’t wait to start learning and getting some cool footage.

Biggest tip: don’t crash or let the battery die mid-flight!

If you’re in the US, you’ll need to take the FAA’s TRUST test. It’s super easy and helps ensure you know the basics. Also, get an app to check for restricted airspace—I use AirHub Portal. Keep in mind that if you use an extended battery, your drone will weigh more than 249 grams.

@Ali
Thanks! I’m in the US and knew about registration but didn’t realize I needed to take the test. I’ll look into that and the app.

No problem! Just make sure you check the FAA requirements, not just your state. You’ll be all set!
