I’m looking for a drone that can follow me around while doing sports and outdoor stuff. I’d really like something that doesn’t need a remote and can shoot in 4K.
Is the DJI Flip my only option here?
This would be my first drone ever, so appreciate any help!
For drones that work without a remote, yeah, the Flip or Neo are pretty much it. Flip’s the better one though. Mini 4 Pro can follow too, but you’ll need the remote for it.
What kind of sport are you doing? I use the Flip while biking and hiking. Don’t need a remote, just the phone, and I can use the controller if I want. I picked the Flip over the Neo because the camera’s better. And I skipped the Mini 4 Pro because I’m usually by myself and want clips of the drone following me while I’m moving, without needing anything in my hands.

Can it follow a bike? What about a motorcycle at lower speeds?
The Flip can go about 35mph. I usually ride my bike around 15-20mph and it keeps up fine. It doesn’t do object tracking, but it tracks the person riding just fine.

Have you tested it in wooded trails or only on open roads?
Yeah I’ve taken it through trails with trees and branches. It beeps like crazy if it senses something in front, and it’ll stop if it really can’t go through. You just set the distance and height, and you’re good. It’s actually a lot of fun.

My nephew rides dirt bikes in the desert and had trouble with DJI’s visual tracking. He switched to a drone that uses a tracking beacon he keeps in his pocket — I think it was a Skydio. It worked better than relying on camera tracking.
I heard the Flip crashes a lot though — is that true?
The only time mine crashed was indoors while I was trying to fly it down some stairs and there wasn’t enough light. I was flying by the controller screen too, not directly looking. Outside, it’s been solid. I’d definitely recommend getting DJI Care no matter what, because crashes happen. Mine didn’t get damaged because of the prop guards and landing on carpet. For solo cycling and running, Flip’s a great pick. But if you’re filming others, the Mini 4 Pro is good too.
Just a heads up — the Mini 4 Pro drops to 30p when you use quick shots. I usually shoot 25/50 and in log, but those aren’t available for quick shots. DJI doesn’t really mention that, so be aware. Still a great drone otherwise.

But with the Neo or Mini 4, I’d still need to bring the remote right?
Yeah I have a Mini 4 and I like it, but using the remote while biking or snowboarding can be a hassle. Works better when you’re in a car or not moving much.
