Looking for a light, budget-friendly drone with a decent camera for hiking and photos

I’ve checked out the DJI Mini series, especially the Mini 3 and Mini 3 Pro. They seem affordable and have great features, but DJI feels like the ‘Apple’ of drones. They’re good but often come at a premium. Are there any comparable options that offer similar quality at a lower price? Or should I just stick with DJI? Open to any advice!

If you want something for more “dynamic” shots, you could consider an FPV drone with the DJI O3 system. But if you’re mostly doing still captures and gliding shots over rivers or mountains, a DJI drone would be ideal. You won’t need to learn a whole new hobby, and the image quality is hard to beat.

@Parker
That’s a good point! I’m mostly doing still shots or smooth glides over scenery, so maybe DJI is the way to go. Any models you’d recommend without the extra features like follow-me or orbit?

For your needs, a DJI Mini should work well. Great video quality and easy to fly without a big learning curve.

In my experience, nothing else on the market matches DJI quality at a lower price. Other drones may be cheaper but usually feel cheaper too, in terms of durability and performance.

Other brands like Potensic are definitely cheaper, but you’ll notice the difference in build quality and features. DJI has its perks.

The Mini 3 is perfect for hiking and photography. Anything besides DJI tends to compromise on quality, so if you’re looking for a great experience, the Mini 3 is worth it.

DJI isn’t overpriced; they’re priced fairly compared to similar quality drones like Autel. Drop below this level, and the quality declines fast.

Totally agree. DJI just dominates in this category, especially for consumer and prosumer options.

Take a look at the Potensic Atom SE—it’s got a decent 3-axis gimbal and is cheaper than most DJI models. Could be worth considering.

DJI may be pricey, but there’s no other brand offering the same features and quality. Cheaper drones on sites like AliExpress often overpromise and underdeliver. If you’re willing to sacrifice a bit, the Potensic Atom SE could be a good middle ground, but DJI remains the best option for quality.

The Fimi X8 Mini is another option. You can find great videos on YouTube that showcase what it can do. Prices are around $350, so it’s a solid choice in this price range.
