Losing my mind trying to choose a motor, please advise

Please help a noob out.

I am building my first drone with these components:

  • Flyfish Volador VX3
  • Speedybee F405 mini stack
  • Avatar HD Pro kit plus ELRS receiver
  • Triblade 3-inch props

It should weigh about 155 grams and run on a 4S battery. I’m stuck between 1404 4600KV and 1404 3800KV motors.

Will 4600KV give too much power and fry the motor/ESC or drain the battery too quickly? Will 3800KV feel sluggish, though better for battery life? What’s everyone else using for similar builds?

And what flight time can I expect with a 550mAh/850mAh 4?

I use 1404 4520kv motors on my 3" 4s Apex with a Vista. A full chooch pulls approximately 38a. I would not go below 4000kV. I am at 249g AUW with a 450mah battery. And I believe the Volador weighs around 10 grammes less.

I have the same motors/props on my analogue Tiny Trainer, the same 4S batteries, and an AUW of around 180g. That thing rips and makes the Apex feel sluggish.

Opt for the higher KV motor and test it carefully. You can use a throttle cap to lower the voltage if 4600KV is too much.

My main concern with that is am I going to push the motor/esc too much. If the drone is heavy, with a big battery and aggressive props and they’re still fighting to spin at a higher rpm, am I likely to fry them, or am I overthinking it and they’re more than capable of handling it?
