Need advice for LAANC services and Part 107 prep

Hi, I’m getting a DJI Mini this week and plan to use it occasionally for commercial work (wedding videos, outdoor events, etc.).

First, what’s the best way to study for the Part 107 knowledge exam? Is the FAA website enough, or are there any good study guides?

Second, I see I need to sign up for a LAANC service. Is there a recommended service for DJI users? I’ll be using iOS or my PC to start, but I want to eventually use the DJI controller with the built-in screen. Can the LAANC process be done directly from the DJI RC2, or is another device better for that?

This is a common question for drone buyers. Please check the weekly thread on this forum for suggestions, answers, and recommendations.

For LAANC, try Aloft. For the 107 exam, Pilot Institute is a solid choice. Just know that ‘best’ doesn’t always mean ‘cheapest.’

Thanks! I’m more concerned with doing it the right way than the cost. I want to make sure I’m a good example for others.

I recommend this book for test prep: 2024 Remote Pilot Test Prep: Study and prepare for your remote pilot FAA Knowledge Exam (ASA Test Prep Series). You can find it here: Amazon.com

Also, this app is great for daily practice questions: ‎FAA PART 107 Practice Test on the App Store

Thanks for the recommendation. I tried that app on my iPhone, but the zoom feature was a bit awkward. It zooms from the top-left corner instead of where I’m touching, but maybe it’ll work better on my iPad. It does seem useful for tracking progress.

I agree with using Pilot Institute. I used it to train for my recreational TRUST certificate, and their videos were really detailed. I passed easily with a perfect score.

I used Mr. Migs’ free YouTube content to study for the Part 107 exam and passed after about 10 days of studying. There were a couple of unfamiliar questions, but it was mostly straightforward.

I used his YouTube channel too, along with some flashcard and quiz apps. I studied for a couple of days and passed without any problems.

+1 for Aloft. Just a heads up, LAANC doesn’t actually connect to the drone. It just sends you a text and email giving permission to fly. The process for unlocking DJI’s geozones is separate and allows the drone to take off.

Thanks for clearing that up! I’m checking out the app now, and it looks really straightforward.

I’m the founder of Aloft. We’d love to have you use us for LAANC. Good luck on your test!
