New to drones, do I have to register my DJI Mini Pro 3?

Just got my first drone for fun and to get some cool shots when I travel. Do I need to register it on the FAA website? And if so, should I choose standard or broadcast? A bit confused on that part lol.

If you’re in the US, you should just register it. Adding any little thing can push it over 250 grams, which means you’ll have to register anyway. It’s only $5 and gives you more freedom with your drone.

Yep, what this guy said. Takes less than an hour, super simple. And hey, you get to add a little ID tag to your drone!

Where did you put the ID on your Mini 3 Pro? I’ve got a Mini 3 too and not sure where to label it. Just use a sharpie?

If you’re in the US, the whole process takes about 30-45 minutes. Register your drone on the FAA Dronezone site (link above). It costs $5 for 3 years. You’ll need your remote ID which you can find in the DJI Fly app under aircraft info. Connect your drone first. After that, you’ll need to take the TRUST safety course, which is quick and free. Even though the Mini 3 is under 250g, new FAA rules from September 2023 will require remote ID registration regardless of use or weight. So better to get it done now.

In Europe (like the Netherlands), you register as a drone operator, not the drone itself. And no certificate needed unless you’re doing commercial stuff.

What if you sell photos or videos you take? Does that change things?

Yep, for commercial purposes you’ll need a license/flight certificate. But still no need to register the drone itself, just put your operator number on it with a fireproof tag.

Thanks! What about if you’re from the US, visit Europe for a bit, take drone shots and want to sell them? Same process? Just trying to make sure.

No need to register, but you do need to complete the TRUST safety test and get the certificate.

I got my certificate and registered my drone just to have the paperwork if anyone ever asks. With all the remote ID rules, I think it’s reasonable to have some basic regulations.

You don’t have to.

No one from the FAA or police is stopping you in the US and asking for your drone paperwork. I’ve flown mine in over 20 countries and never been questioned. Wouldn’t stress too much.

Only if it’s for recreational use and it doesn’t go over 250 grams.

Paying $5 is worth it over risking fines. You never know if you’ll get asked by a strict cop.

You need to register if:

  1. You’re using it commercially under Part 107.
  2. You use the Intelligent Flight Battery Plus, which makes the drone heavier than 250g.

Always check your local drone laws to be sure.

For recreational use only, you don’t need to register the Mini 3 Pro if you’re using the standard battery.

Do you know the UAS model for the DJI Mini 3? It’s asking me for that info and I’m not sure where to find it. Planning to do commercial work and upgrade to the bigger battery. Thinking about maybe getting the Mini 4 Pro or a Mavic too.
