Newbie struggling to fly my drone… DJI Fly app not on Play Store and now my phone won't fit the controller

How are people dealing with this?

EDIT/UPDATE #3: Finally got through everything and with the light fading and rain coming in, I gave it a quick test flight on my front patio. It was showing 21 satellites, but there was still a red warning icon. When I tapped it, it said there was no left/right or forward/back movement, which I definitely noticed once it was in the air. I could rotate it, but not move it. I guess that’s a whole different issue, so I’ll probably make another post about that. Just leaving this one up in case it helps anyone else.

EDIT/UPDATE #2: I still haven’t been able to pair anything because my Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra just won’t fit in the phone holder. I removed the outer OtterBox case, but even with just the thin inner case, it’s still too tight. Even if I managed to force it in, I wouldn’t be able to access the power or volume-down buttons. This just seems like a weird design choice? I can’t believe it’s this hard to mount a phone.

EDIT/UPDATE: I managed to get the app installed, but now I’m wondering… If I go ahead and activate everything with the RC-N2, will it cause any issues later when I switch to the RC-2 controller I have arriving in a week? Can I use both controllers without a problem?

I’m so confused. The sidebar of what? This forum? I found the link through the quick start guide, but then realized the app wasn’t on Google Play anymore—apparently removed over security concerns. If I had an older backup phone, I’d take the risk, but this is my only phone and I’m not super comfortable with that. Wonder what everyone else is doing here?

@Davi
The forum sidebar has official DJI links and a few third-party ones too.

@Davi
Not using phones.

But are people really just disabling security settings to install this? It’s my only phone and that feels risky. It was removed from Google Play for a reason. Are people just ignoring that and installing anyway?

@Davi
It’s fine.

Thanks, I installed it. One thing I’m still unsure about… if I go ahead and activate the drone and set everything up with the RC-N2 controller, will it be a hassle to switch to the RC-2 when it gets here next week?

@Davi
You’ll just need to re-pair the drone each time you switch controllers. It’s easy—hold the drone’s pair button and follow the controller’s pairing combo.

Excellent. Thanks!

Right, but trying to install it forces me to mess with security settings because the APK isn’t trusted. It just seems risky on a brand new phone. I’m so tempted though because the weather’s perfect today…

@Davi
Yeah, that app hasn’t been on the Play Store in ages. Not even sure it ever was. Get the APK from DJI’s official site and you’re good.

Oh really? I’d read somewhere it was a recent removal, but that changes things if it’s been like that for a while and people have been using it safely. I might just go ahead and install it—there’s a short window of good weather here today before the rain hits.

@Davi
Nothing wrong with the app if you get it from DJI’s site. Most of Google’s warnings are overblown. Just avoid shady sources and you’re fine.

@Davi
Just go for it :hugs: Have fun flying! Don’t forget to share your shots!

Also, make sure you’re all good legally—get that TRUST cert if you’re in the U.S.

Yep, I got my TRUST certificate last night! So now that the app’s installed, if I do the activation and setup with the RC-N2, will I have any issues later when my RC-2 controller arrives?

@Davi
Nope, swapping controllers is fine. You can even use either controller with different drones later too.

Well I’d be ready to pair them now except my Galaxy S24 Ultra doesn’t fit in the holder. Even with the OtterBox off, it’s a tight squeeze. I get how it’s supposed to sit in there, but the bumpers at the top edge stop it from seating properly. I feel like it’s at max stretch and I’m scared of snapping something.

I really want to fly today, but I don’t want to risk damaging the phone or the controller.
