Newbie wondering… Why didn’t my DJI M4P stop the motors after flipping it upside down?

I’m new to this and I want to know if it’s because I’m on the default emergency setting for turning off the motors? I watched a video showing how to launch it by hand, which worked perfectly. But then, I tried to grab it when it was coming down by reaching from behind and flipping it upside down, like they showed in the video, but it didn’t cut the power at all. Instead, it started going wild, and I had to shut off the whole drone. After that, I got warnings about the gimbal overheating and exceeding its range. I’m just curious—what went wrong?

That method might ruin your drone. If you send it to DJI, they’ll log it as a crash. Just fly it as it’s meant to be flown; no need to turn it upside down.

Maybe wait until you get more comfortable flying it before trying those unapproved landing methods.

I actually did a perfect hand launch on my first attempt. But it seems pointless if it doesn’t turn off when it’s flipped like in the video. I’m curious if it could be that emergency setting still being on Only In Emergencies. If you switch it to All the Time, a warning pops up saying Fly With Caution. That makes sense. Being new, I just want to figure out how it works. Flying has been fun; I’ve gotten some footage and pictures, but I still need to choose a video editor. I’ve flown fixed-wing planes, but this is my first rotary wing experience, and I’m noticing the differences. I instinctively try to pull the left joystick back to ascend when surprised, like in a fixed-wing, but that only makes it drop faster. I’m starting to see it more as the throttle, which helps.

You could say you don’t know, that would help. Sometimes you want this mode, like landing on a boat or in mountains where there’s no smooth surface, and it’s tricky to use both hands. I haven’t faced this issue in my 3 years with the M3P, but quick searches show DJI drones don’t stop after flipping if the obstacle avoidance is off, either set that way or if it’s too dark.

That’s a risky way to damage the gimbal. Better to land it in your palm.

You can also just press auto land as long as your hand is underneath it first.
